Eat Almonds to Lower Cholesterol

In August of this year the University of Toronto in Canada completed a three-month study on patients who had a 263 milligrams per deciliter of cholesterol in their blood and found that eating 2.5 ounces (73 grams) of raw, unblanched almonds daily lowered their cholesterol by 12 percent.

Study verifies no weight gain

What's more those patients had no weight gain from eating the almonds even though there were 400 calories in the "two fistfuls" of almonds. Cyril W.C. Kendall, author of the study said, ""We saw a nice dose response. With only a few ounces of nuts, there was a good effect. When people ate the almonds, they also had a satiating effect, so they cut down on other foods."

About one third of the population or 100 million people in the United States have cholesterol levels over 200, according to the American Heart Association. Of those, 41 percent are at a higher risk for heart disease because their levels exceed 240.

Nuts deserve a second look

Recently science has been taking a second look at nuts for lowering cholesterol says Purdue University nutrition professor Richard Mattes. "This same cholesterol-lowering effect has been shown with a wide array of nuts, including walnuts, peanuts and macadamia nuts," he says. "That eating nuts lowers cholesterol and triglycerides while weight doesn't go up has been consistently found in studies for about five years. The results have been remarkably clear."
