M.D.’s overlook nutritional advice The October issue of The American Journal of Preventive Medicine (AJPM) says that nutrition counseling is one of the most important factors in the health of high-risk patients. Yet doctors spend less than a minute on nutritional counseling with their patients, according to the study. Note: Medical schools do not offer nutritional education as a specialty area. Many common diseases could be treated with nutrition Dr. Charles B. Eaton, the author of the study at Brown Medical School and the Center of Primary Care and Prevention at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island says, "The need for nutrition counseling is pressing in light of the epidemic of chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity and hyperlipidemia (excessive fat content in the blood).” That oversight on the part of physicians suggests "that more in-depth nutrition counseling visits will need to occur outside a typical primary-care office visit," Eaton says. Proper nutrition lets body heal on its own In a address delivered before the 52nd Annual National Convention and Symposium of the American Naturopathic Association, Inc. June 26 to July 3, 1948, Royal Lee, founder of Standard Process Company, stated: "Too many starving people are being drugged and injected with antitoxins when the obvious and rational treatment is to provide the proper food materials so their own defense mechanism can go back to its normal function of digesting the germ, virus and other infective agents that attaack the weak and ill fed". The AJPM report goes on to say that every year 300,000 to 800,000 deaths occur as a result of nutrition-related diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, obesity and diabetes. Consumer group calls for more nutrition counseling A national watchdog group called Healthy People 2010 has come up some nutritional objectives recommending that nutrition counseling be done in 75 percent of doctor visits where people are suffering from hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In this current study (which studied 3, 475 patients visiting 138 doctors in Ohio) less than 25 percent of the patients received any nutritional information. Yet, Hippocrates (the father of modern medicine and the namesake of the Hippocratic ethical oath doctors take) said, “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.” Want a personal nutritional analysis?
